Crisafulli Case Histories - Two Stainless Steel FLUMP Applications Dredging Caustic and Abrasive Materials
Crisafulli FLUMP Installation Profile
Customer #1
Type of Facility: Chemical Plant
This chemical manufacturer purchased a Crisafulli FLUMP system to manage industrial lagoons with abrasive, radioactive, acidic sludge - i.e., a very tough environment. Crisafulli manufactured the FLUMP from 316 stainless steel and utilized a rubber lined Crisafulli Pump. The dredge is operated remotely from a small operator cab located on shore adjacent to the containment. The Crisafulli FLUMP dredge pumps material approximately 600 feet to a process building. The dredged and pumped material has properties much like beach sand. High specific gravity and very abrasive. The material is low level, radioactive. The liquid in the pond is acidic with a pH level of 3-4 nominally. As dredging has proceeded, the pH level has risen somewhat.
This system is hardwired remote control from shore to dredge. This type of control is Crisafulli's standard means of remote control.

Problem: After an unsuccessful trial of another manufacturer's dredging system, the customer presented the following application to Crisafulli - need to remove 28 feet of material resting on the bottom of an irregularly-shaped settling pond, approx. 450 x 200 feet (137 x 60m). Volume of material is estimated at 75,000 yd3 (57,000 m3). Material characteristics were chloride salts (with a pH less than 7) and extremely abrasive sand particles. Transfer of material from pond, through a pipeline, into an adjacent processing building where rock, debris, and other solids are crushed before further processing takes place was the essential requirement. The customer desired to move 70,000 GPM per day with a solids content of 10% by weight.
Previous attempts to transfer the material were unsuccessful when low production hampered the operation because the competitor's dredge could not effectively excavate the material. Excessive wear due to abrasion was also apparent on the competitor's unit. The customer emphasized that dredge service life & reliability were vital to plant operations.
Solution: Crisafulli proposed a Crisafulli FLUMP Dredge manufactured from stainless steel components and utilizing a rubber-lined pump to address both of the customer's primary concerns, namely, withstanding the corrosive effects of the acid and the abrasive effects of the particulates present in the slurry. Crisafulli built a 60 HP FLUMP (Floating Lagoon Pumper) system, built around Crisafulli's 4" J-series pump (with a Crisafulli Impeller Inside). The Crisafulli Pump was constructed of 316 stainless steel for corrosion resistance, and rubber-lined to minimize abrasion. The flotation system consisted of polyethylene pontoons on a specially coated carbon steel framework.
Result: After several months of successful operation, the customer purchased a second Crisafulli FLUMP Dredging system for another application at the same facility.
